The prototype for the Macintosh (OS X) and the Web-based versions are ready and currently in the Beta Testing phase. Once the Macintosh version has finished this phase, work would commence on the Windows version.
This software can be used to convert text in legacy fonts like Preeti, Kantipur or other Nepali or Hindi (Devanagari Script) Fonts into UTF-8 encoded (unicode) text.

This (or my website) is indeed the place for the software. The software is not free or open source.
I do however from time to time make updates and changes to the system at which time I open it up for testing by people.
Keep visiting this page or my website (link above) to know when the next update is planned. Off hand, expect something early next year (Feb-Mar).

Yes, you are right, this software is not free. People who know the use for this and have to convert hundreds of pages worth of text readily and willing pay for the work it does.
Features of this utility take time and resources to develop. I have worked a lot in making this 100% accurate and also its integration with other softwares. And thus the charge.
However, for organizations that are not for profit and are serving the larger good of the society, I do not charge any money!
